Pre-Registration for Gen Con 50 has officially opened. This year the “best four days in gaming” will commence on August 17-20 in Indianapolis. The Gen Con Housing block opens on February 12th at noon. Registration for events will begin on May 28th.
This will be my 11th Gen Con in Indianapolis. I began attending the convention in order to meet some of the podcasters I had begun listening to at that time. There are still a few of them who are still publishing new content, but I keep my Gen Con traditions alive and well.
Gen Con continues to post record attendance each year. In 2016 Gen Con had over two hundred thousand attendees. According to Visit Indy, an Indianapolis based tourism group, Gen Con provides approximately $72 million in economic impact to the Indianapolis region. Gen Con will be returning to the Indiana Convention Center and Lucas Oil Stadium through 2021.
I have experienced the growth of Gen Con over the years. It has been amazing to watch the city grow to embrace Gen Con and the Gen Con attendees. The downtown area transforms as hundreds of thousands of gamers converge for this amazing event. Over the years I have begun to bring my daughter to the convention as well. It has become one of the events on our calendar that we look forward to the most. One of our favorite events each year is the Christian Worship Service on Sunday morning.
It will be my goal over the next 8 months to bring you coverage of the historic 50th convention. I will give tips and guides as someone who has gone to Gen Con on a budget for over 10 years. I am also someone who is familiar with the Indianapolis area (I live an hour from from the convention center). I have stayed in the Gen Con housing block. I have driven in each day. I have experienced the convention in many different ways. It is my hope to bring you quality insight that you will find useful as you plan your own trip to Indianapolis this August.
